Secrets of the Divine

Recovery | Body Tired VS. Soul Tired

Recovery | Body Tired VS. Soul Tired

Unlike feeling tired in our physical bodies, a weary soul is often the by-product of persistent anxiety or stress. Have you ever slept a good 8-10 hours and woke up, to then go about your morning and still feel sluggish? Empaths and Highly Sensitive People are especially prone to feeling soul tired due to our sensitivity to the world around us and our physiological capacity to feel more than others. Can someone say stimuli overload?  But what’s the difference between body tired and soul tired? How do you determine which one you’re encountering and how do you recover that energy?

Soul Tired vs. Body Tired

Feeling soul tired isn’t something you can just sleep off. It’s often a sign that you need to reset your emotional compass and mental processes. Simply put, being soul tired means your emotional and mental capabilities have reached their end. Signs of being soul tired include feeling triggered more easily by the outside world, lack of motivation, and mood swings. In addition to having little to no motivation, you may also notice yourself engaging in negative subconscious behaviors such as overeating and withdrawing from others. You won’t want to “people,” even though you’re an amazing human connector. In contrast, when your body is tired you may feel physically run down but in high spirits. You want to physically rest, but you’re feeling joyful, motivated and you’re navigating your emotions pretty wisely, When it’s your soul that needs the break, you’ll need universal firepower.

Recharge in Nature

There are several ways to recharge your soul, but it’s important to find the right ritual for yourself and stick to it so you don’t end up wiped out mentally and emotionally. As an empath, introvert and highly sensitive person, you’re a healer and it’s your responsibility to discover your rhythm and show up as your best self to the world. Engage in activities that clear your mind such as meditation or listening to instrumental music. Nature is extremely powerful in healing too. Take time to disconnect and spend time outside whether it's a short walk, a hike in the woods, or a trip to the beach. I also love petting plants as I walk or sitting by a tree with my back against the trunk. Once you are immersed in nature, ground yourself by engaging your senses. Pay attention to what you see, hear, smell, taste, and touch at the moment. This allows you to close off your emotions and your mind and open your heart to feel while the other two recharge.

Move the Energy

Another way to restore your soul is to release stuck emotions through your body. When you find yourself in a negative situation, such as a confrontation that didn’t go your way, hypothetical situations; running through what you could have said or done, over and over again will take over your emotional state. In these moments it’s so important to get out of your head and into your body. Release emotions through working out, running, dancing or yoga. If you don’t release what you are feeling it may later be stored in the body, and that’s not pretty. By releasing these negative emotions you will regain the ability to make decisions from a place of calm and clarity that are aligned with your higher self. If it’s the energy of those around you that is exhausting your soul, move energy through breathwork or reiki to restore your energy. And when all else fails, a good cry can do wonders to restore the soul.

Talk to a community of Empaths and Highly Sensitive People Who Get it

We often pull back and isolate ourselves when we feel misunderstood. When your emotional and mental levels are at zero, isolation seems to be the only answer, but if you still have something left in you, be sure to seek out fellow empaths and intuitives who understand what you are going through and the weight of the emotional energy you are feeling. I picture us all like candles. When we’re soul tired, our light has dimmed. Talk it out with your people and allow others’ lights to restore your own dim flame. Having a small group of quality people and/or coach that you connect with on a soul level is an often overlooked method of self-love. Having your tribe will help you tremendously through energetic slumps.

Dear Kattie,
Thank you for this reminder! As very high sensitive person I have been feeling this very conflicting body vs soul energy sapping all week. I know innately what is going on, but sometimes having it written in black and white helps to rejuvenate the behavior!
Grateful,
Holli R. Fields
